Let’s face it, if you are starting up your business, you are not likely to be in a position to hire a graphic designer to give you THE BEST EVER logo and branding you’ve ever wanted in the world so you go down the DIY route.
So, can you design your logo yourself?
Yes, you can! BUT there may be some big hurdles & even more costs later on as you start to realise the complexities and considerations that go into designing logos.
For example;
You may design a logo on your phone using a free app, it looks great on your social media posts, yet when you come to get a printed pop-up banner or printed table-cloth with your logo on for a stall or trade booth, your logo is blurry and unclear.
Or you’ve asked an AI generator to design your logo and it’s spelt your business name wrong, causing you to spend more time correcting it. (Or you leave it spelt wrong, which I have come across!)
Or you’ve designed a logo, got the business cards printed, turned up at a networking meeting to find someone else has the exact same design elements as yours and it all gets rather embarrassing.
Or you have spent time designing your logo with all the colours you want in the right place to find that the person you’ve landed a big collaboration project with needs another colour-way version of your logo so it can be seen against the colours they use.
The list could go on and on.
No graphic designer has a magic wand to know ALL the scenarios that you may end up using your logo in the future, as businesses grow & evolve, but if they are anything like me, then I take into account customer touch-points that match your business goals & ideal customer, to make sure you have these logo variations covered without having to spend extra time yourself.
However, you may be happy knowing that it may cost you more time (and money) later on, as you just want something to start you off. This is absolutely fine, just promise me you are saving up to invest in your branding in the future as it ultimately coincides with customer confidence to buy from you and can lead to business growth.
So when should you hire a Graphic Designer?
When you have the funds
You appreciate the creative process
You don’t have the technical capabilities for setting up artwork files
You want to look professional
You want to exude confidence so that customers can trust you
You want a unique logo
You want visual consistency in your branding
